Record by record

161 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

BCM or SDM Replacement: B1001 DTC Clearing Procedure

    1. 1Fault

      • The SIR lamp stays on steady after an SDM or BCM has been replaced, with DTC B1001 current in the SDM.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • When the ignition is first turned to RUN, the SDM compares the restraints ID stored in the SDM to the restraints ID stored in the body control module (BCM).
      • B1001 sets if the restraints ID in the SDM does not match the one in the BCM, or the VIN information in the SDM does not match the VIN information stored in the PCM/VCM.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. A replaced SDM or BCM must learn the restraints ID, which requires performing a 10 minute V.T.D. "Vehicle Theft Deterrent - Learn" with the Tech 2.
      2. On some vehicles a calibration may need to be selected after choosing "Vehicle Theft Deterrent - Learn"; select the one labeled "Vehicle Theft Deterrent for Passlock sensor".

      Caution

      • A 30 minute Theft relearn will not allow the SDM or BCM to learn the restraints ID.

    Speedometer Needle Accuracy Preliminary Information

    1. 1Fault

      • A customer may say the speedometer needle appears inaccurate.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • An instrument panel cluster with a physical speedometer needle drives the needle electrically with a stepper motor, and some variation in accuracy is possible.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Digital readouts such as the "Digital Speedometer" on the DIC read the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) directly and are much more accurate.
      2. The specification for needle accuracy is +/- 2 MPH (= 3.22 km/h) at any given speed when looking straight at the needle.
    3. 3Correction

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that the speedometer needle appears to be inaccurate. Dealer should advise the customer the specification for speedometer needle accuracy is +/- 2 MPH (= 3.22 km/h) at any given speed when looking straight at the needle. Â

    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Monitoring devices and other electronic accessories such as aftermarket cruise control or police speed checking devices (RADAR or LIDAR) may cause one or more of the listed concerns.
      • Many of the problems could come from an open connection on the HSCAN bus; a device that connects to only one CAN + causes bus errors and erratic ECU behavior.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • If normal SI diagnostics find no other root cause, check for a device plugged into the ALDL or Data Link Connector (DLC) for tracking and/or maintenance interval scheduling.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If SI diagnostics do not find the source and the device is available, try to duplicate the condition, then remove the device to see whether the condition is eliminated.
      2. If removing the DLC interface device resolves the concern, tell the customer the result and that they should work with the device's supplier for further resolution.

EVAP System Leak Diagnosis for MIL with DTCs P0442/P0455

    1. 1Fault

      • The MIL is illuminated and DTC P0442 (EVAP small leak detected) and/or P0455 (EVAP large leak detected) is set in the Engine Control Module (ECM).
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • DTC P0455 sets for a large leak or a purge blockage; a large leak can come from an unseated tube connection, a damaged tube, a stuck open canister vent valve or a stuck closed purge valve.
      • DTC P0442 sets for a small leak, which can come from a stuck open purge valve or a stuck open canister vent valve.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Inspect all purge connections for proper installation and look for damage or wear along the lines; if damage is seen, confirm with the smoke test.
      2. Some leaks show only under pressure and some only under vacuum, so check both ways.
      3. Cycling the purge and vent solenoids with GDS2 while inspecting may indicate a sticking valve.
      4. Critical connections on the engine side: purge tube to purge valve at the intake manifold, purge tube to chassis EVAP line at the rear of the engine near the transmission, and chassis EVAP line to canister.
      5. Critical connections on the tank side: fuel tank load line to canister, vent valve line to vent valve, fuel tank load line jumper connection near the fuel tank, and the fuel tank cap being closed properly.
