A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. Odometer Accuracy Verification
1Fault
- The customer says the odometer appears inaccurate compared with a known distance traveled.
2Finding the cause
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- On a straight road over a mile long, mark a GPS waypoint when the odometer (not the trip odometer) rolls over a digit, take a reading when it rolls to the next digit, and compare the actual distance with the odometer.
- Confirm that the original size tires and wheels are fitted and that the axle ratio is as specified on the SPID label and has not been modified.
- If those are correct and the odometer is beyond the limit, look at the relationship between the VSS and the reluctor on the transmission output shaft, and inspect the associated wiring and connectors closely.
3Correction
Repair
- Finally, it may be necessary to exchange the instrument panel cluster (IPC) for a replacement unit.
Caution
- A tolerance of plus or minus 4% is generally allowed, but each dealer must know the local requirements before verifying an odometer.
- Do not compare with another vehicle or with the trip odometer; expressway mileage markers are typically not accurate enough either.
