Record by record

211 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesSingle-cylinder misfire (P0300-P0308) and/or chirp, squeak or tick at camshaft speed: worn cam lobe / lifter, valve or valve spring2

  1. Manufacturer communication2002–2006 GMC YUKON DENALI ・ 2023-05-06(3 earlier editions of this document folded here)

Diagnostic tip: valve, lifter or camshaft issue

    1. 1Fault

      • Misfire, chirp, squeak, squeal or tick noise, or MIL illuminated.
      • DTCs P0300 (engine misfire detected) and P0301 through P0308 (misfire detected on cylinders 1 through 8) are listed.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Possible causes: worn camshaft lobe and/or lifter roller, a sticking valve, valve leakage, a broken valve spring, or a collapsed AFM lifter.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. A verified noise is not eliminated by canceling fuel injectors and occurs at camshaft speed (half of crankshaft speed).
      2. If applying pressure to the valve side of the rocker changes the noise, a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder is most likely.
      3. Disconnect the coils and injectors on one bank, run the engine with that valve cover removed, back off the rocker arm a couple of turns and listen for a change in the noise.
      4. Measure cam lobe lift at the pushrod side of the rocker arm and compare with other rockers on the same bank; the misfiring or ticking cylinder should have clearly less lift.
      5. A good indicator of a sticking valve is misfires that keep counting on an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.
      1 more points
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      • If a worn camshaft lobe or lifter roller is found, replace the camshaft and all lifters, and the plastic lifter guide for the affected lifter.

      Caution

      • A damaged cam lobe is easy to overlook through the lifter bores, and unworn lifter rollers do not mean the cam lobes are okay; inspect both carefully.

Service Engine Soon Lamp, Misfire, Engine Noise Diagnostic Information

    1. 1Fault

      • Customers may complain of an SES light, engine misfire, and/or engine noise.
      • If the SES light is on, there will be a P0300-P0308 DTC with misfires counting on a single cylinder, which may or may not be felt.
      • A verified noise is not eliminated by canceling fuel injectors and occurs at camshaft speed (half of crankshaft speed).
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • If SI diagnosis does not isolate the cause, it may be a worn camshaft lobe and/or lifter roller, a sticking valve, valve leakage, a broken valve spring, or a collapsed AFM (Active Fuel Management) lifter.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. During the noise, press with a wooden hammer handle on the rocker arms at the valve side, push rod side, and side of the rocker to find which one is making noise.
      2. If pressure on the valve side of the rocker changes the noise, it is most likely a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder.
      3. Measure the cam lobe lift at the push rod side of the rocker arm.
      4. A good indicator of a sticking valve is engine misfires that continue to count on an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.
      5. Release the air pressure from the cylinder and work the valve up and down in the guide while turning it 360 degrees; if any binding is felt, a stem to guide clearance concern exists.

2-3 Upshift and 3-2 Downshift Clunk Normal Condition

    1. 1Fault

      • A clunk noise can be heard on a 2-3 upshift or a 3-2 downshift.
      • The condition may be more pronounced on a 4-wheel drive vehicle because of the additional tolerances in the transfer case.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • During a 2-3 upshift the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied; the timing of this shift can momentarily reverse the torque on the output shaft, which makes the clunk.
      • The same torque reversal can occur on a 3-2 downshift, when the 3-4 clutch is released and the 2-4 band applied.

    Remedy
This information was created to inform the technician that the 2-3 upshift and the 3-2 downshift clunk is caused by the releasing of the 2-4 band and application of the 3-4 clutch assembly during an upshift. Also during a 3-2 downshift, the releasing of the 3-4 clutch during the application of the 2-4 band, can cause torque reversal down the output shaft creating a clunk. This is a normal condition.

  1. Manufacturer communication2000–2006 GMC YUKON DENALI ・ 2018-08-20

Light Duty Trucks: Grinding Noise in Park with 4WD Low

    1. 1Fault

      • Light duty trucks with automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive may make a grinding/ratcheting noise when the transmission is shifted into park while the transfer case is in 4 wheel drive low (4LO) range.
      • The grind/ratchet noise lasts approximately one second.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • When the transmission is shifted from drive or reverse into park with the transfer case in 4LO, the driveline unloads and turns the propeller shaft approximately 1/8 of a turn.
      • The gear reduction in the transfer case makes the transmission output shaft turn faster than the parking pawl will hold, so the parking pawl grinds/ratchets until the output shaft stops.
    3. 3Correction

      Caution

      • This should be considered characteristic of 4 wheel drive vehicles operated in 4LO.

Brake Hydro-Boost Housing Relief Valve Bore Recall

    1. 1Fault

      • The relief valve bore in the brake hydro-boost module may be out of specification, which could fracture the relief valve o-ring seal inside the module.
      • If the seal fractures, the driver may hear during braking an engine compartment noise like the one made when the steering wheel is turned to a full stop, and may feel slightly higher steering effort while braking and parking.
      • Under certain driving conditions a fractured seal may require slightly more brake pedal effort for the same deceleration, which could result in a crash without prior warning.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Inspection found a machining error in the relief bore cavity of modules produced on one of the automated boring machines used for the base housing.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Look at the color of the relief valve: if it is metallic yellow or looks like brass, no further action is required.
      2. If a yellow, pink or white paint mark is visible, no further inspection or repair is required, and any stamped number is to be disregarded.
      3. With no paint marks and a stamped number 2, 3 or 4 visible, no further inspection or repair is required.
      4. If a stamped number 1 is visible on the machined surface, the relief valve must be replaced.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. With the ignition OFF, pump the brake pedal at least ten times.
      2. Unscrew the original relief valve from the hydraulic brake booster with the tool supplied with the new relief valve.
      3. Insert the new relief valve into the bore and tighten it to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
      4. With the master cylinder mounted flush to the booster, install the nuts and tighten them to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

What the documents say to do

Parking brake linings worn out prematurely, parking brake does not hold (PBR single-shoe drum-in-hat)

      Confirm

      • On complaint vehicles examined in the field, wear occurred earlier and to a greater extent on the driver's side parking brake unit and was largely localized at the tip of one of the linings.

      Repair

      1. A revised clip designed to exert less force on the shoe went into MY 2003 production and into the service part stream. Installing the newer clip and replacing worn linings has been shown to remedy the defect.

Technical Bulletin Revision for 2013-2014 Model Years

    1. 1Fault

      • On automatic transmission vehicles, a clunk noise when shifting between Park and Drive, Park and Reverse, or Drive and Reverse.
      • A clunk noise while driving when the accelerator is quickly depressed and then released.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Gear clearance or freeplay (lash) can produce a clunk whenever a gear is loaded and unloaded quickly or the direction of rotation is reversed.
      • In a 4-wheel drive vehicle the transfer case gears and their clearances add freeplay on top of that from the rear axle gears, universal joints and transmission.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • Compare the complaint vehicle with a like vehicle; if the results are the same, it is a normal condition.
    3. 3Correction

      Caution

      • Because every driveline component has some lash by design, changing driveline components may not reduce the lash satisfactorily.
      • The clunk noise does not adversely affect durability or performance.
      • Do not confuse this with the clunk at stop or from launch that is handled by cleaning/lubricating the rear propshaft slip yoke splines (Corporate Bulletin Number 09-04-21-003D or later).

      Not stated

Read the sentences of the record
    Cause
On certain vehicles, the relief valve o-ring seal within the brake hydro-boost module could fail. If this happens during braking applications, the driver may be able to hear an engine compartment noise similar to the sound that occurs when the steering wheel is turned to a full stop position. The driver could also experience a slight increase in steering efforts while braking and parking. Under certain driving conditions, a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort may be required to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seal failure. Correction: Dealers will inspect the hydro-boost module, and replace it, if necessary.
