The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Common on this vehicle:Warning lightMisfire or rough idleLoss of engine power, no accelerationStalls or shuts offLeakNoiseGauge or instrument faultHard start or long crank

Record by record

48 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesSingle-cylinder misfire (P0300-P0308) and/or chirp, squeak or tick at camshaft speed: worn cam lobe / lifter, valve or valve spring2

  1. Manufacturer communication2000–2006 GMC YUKON XL ・ 2017-08-15(2 earlier editions of this document folded here)

Engine Misfire and Service Engine Soon Lamp Information

    1. 1Fault

      • With the SES light on, a P0300-P0308 DTC is found with misfires counting on a single cylinder, which may or may not be felt.
      • The noise may be described as a chirp, squeak, squeal or tick and may increase off of idle.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • A worn cam lobe on this engine family generally makes a consistent chirp, squeak, squeal or tick at camshaft speed and/or a misfire with a P0300-P0308 DTC.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Press on the rocker arms with a wooden hammer handle while the noise is present; if pressing the valve side of a rocker changes the noise, a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder is most likely.
      2. Measure cam lobe lift at the push rod side of the rocker arm; it will differ from the SI specification but should be similar to the other rockers on the same bank.
      3. A bore scope or pen light may help when inspecting the cam lobes through the lifter bores.
      4. A good sign of a sticking valve is that misfires keep counting during an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.
      5. The Cylinder Leakage Test in SI should typically isolate valve leakage by showing excessive leakage past an intake or exhaust valve compared with the others.
      1 more points
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If a worn cam lobe or lifter roller is found, replace the camshaft and all lifters per SI, plus the plastic lifter guide for the affected lifter (for the 2010 model year, all the plastic lifter guides).
      2. If force is needed to tap the valve off its seat, there is excessive carbon build up, which may be repaired by decarboning the engine.

    Remedy
This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on at low mileage. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and or P0430 stored. Technician should be advised that the catalytic converter efficiency Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and P0430 are disabled for the first hour of engine run time to allow break-in of the catalytic converter. Technician will need to use a Tech2 to check the verify engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the Instrument Panel Cluster  Data Display/Data 1 List in the scan tool match. If the engine run time is less than one hour, the battery may have been disconnected, or another vehicle power loss event may have occurred, during vehicle manufacturing. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle. If the catalytic converter was replaced and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes set it may be a result of the engine run time restrictions no longer being in place since the vehicle is no longer new. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle.

What the documents say to do

Crankshaft position sensor may work intermittently or fail (8.1L V8) - recall 07V-521

      Repair

      1. Dealers replace the crankshaft position sensor.
      2. As the remedy, an improved CKP is installed.

      Caution

      • All of the surveyed consumers noted multiple stalling events before the CKP was properly diagnosed and replaced.
Read the sentences of the record
    Cause
On certain vehicles equipped with an 8.1L engine, the crankshaft position sensor may fail. If the sensor operates intermittently, the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may illuminate and the vehicle may run rough. In addition, the engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or after a cool-down period. If the sensor becomes inoperable permanently, the engine will quit running and will not re-start. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor.

Known issuesFuel module reservoir assembly: fuel pump wire connectors may overheat - recall 05V-1551

  1. Recall2000–2001 GMC YUKON XL ・ —

Fuel Module Reservoir Assembly Overheating Recall

    1. 1Fault

      • Some vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies whose fuel pump wires and/or connectors may overheat under certain operating conditions.
      • If the exposed ignition circuit wire shorts to ground, the fuel pump fuse blows, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start; if the ignition circuit or ground wire shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, fuel level readings may be inaccurate.
      • If enough heat reaches the pass-through connector, a hole may form in it, which may turn on the Service Engine Soon light during the emission system diagnostics routine; fuel vapor, and in some cases liquid fuel, may leak from the tank through the hole.
      • If enough fuel leaked out and an ignition source were present, a vehicle fire could occur.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Fretting corrosion caused by vibration inside the tank was identified as the cause of high resistance within the fuel pump connector.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. Dealers remove the fuel tank, remove the fuel module reservoir assembly and install a new service kit, which includes a new pass-through connector and a wiring harness for the fuel pump and fuel sender card.
      2. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable, then remove and discard the "ECM B" fuse.
      3. In the revised bulletin, the fuel and EVAP pipes are capped with J 41413-300, EVAP Cap/Plug Kit, to prevent fuel system contamination.
      4. Remove the 4 pin Metri Pack 150 electrical connector from the vehicle's body harness.
      5. Connect the new GT280 connector to the vehicle's body harness with the 4 butt splice connectors contained in the kit.

    • Repair:Install the new fuel pump fuse contained in the kit into the vehicle's electrical center (ECM B).
    Cause
CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH FUEL MODULE RESERVOIR ASSEMBLIES THAT CONTAIN FUEL PUMP WIRES CONNECTORS MAY OVERHEAT UNDER CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS.
    Remedy
DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE FUEL TANK, AND REMOVE THE MODULE RESERVOIR ASSEMBLIES FROM THE TANK, AND INSTALL A NEW SERVICE KIT FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM LETTER TO OWNERS WAS MAILED ON MAY 25, 2005. THE OWNERS WERE RE-NOTIFIED ON OCTOBER 19, 2005, SINCE PARTS ARE NOW AVAILABE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.
    Consequence
IF THE IGNITION CIRCUIT WIRE IS EXPOSED, THE FUEL PUMP FUSE WILL BLOW, DISABLING THE FUEL PUMP AND CAUSING AN ENGINE STALL OR NO-START CONDITION. IF SUFFICIENT HEAT IS CONDUCTED TO THE PASS-THROUGH CONNECTOR, A HOLE IN THE CONNECTOR MAY RESULT, WHICH MAY CAUSE A 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' LIGHT TO BE ILLUMINATED DURING THE EMISSION SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE. FUEL VAPOR AND IN SOME CASES LIQUID FUEL MAY LEAK OUT OF THE FUEL TANK THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE CONNECTOR BODY. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. ALSO IF THE IGNITION CIRCUIT OR GROUND WIRE IS EXPOSED AND SHORTS TO THE FUEL LEVEL SENDER CARD WIRES, INACCURATE FUEL LEVEL READINGS MAY RESULT.

Engine Misfire and Rough Idle Malfunction Indicator Lamp

    1. 1Fault

      • Customers may complain of a MIL and/or engine misfire, rough idle, extended crank, or crank no start.
      • One or more misfire codes (DTC P0300-P0308) are found stored in the ECM.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • The condition may result from major carbon build up on the intake and/or exhaust valves due to fuel contamination or incomplete burning of the fuel.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. With the engine cold, compression on multiple cylinders may read 0 PSI (= 0 kPa).
      2. The engine may pop through the intake or exhaust while cranking, and the spark plugs may be fuel fouled.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If there is valve damage or cam followers are out of place, make the mechanical repairs first, then perform the cleaning procedure to keep the concern from returning.
      2. With the engine at operating temperature, slowly induce a bottle of GM Upper Engine and Fuel Injection Cleaner with RPM held above idle so the engine does not stall (typically around 2,000 RPM).
      3. Turn the engine off and let the cleaner soak for 2.5 to 3 hours.
      4. To complete the repair, change the engine oil and filter.

      Parts

      • Upper Engine and Fuel Injector Cleaner is P/N 88861803 (in Canada, P/N 88861804).

    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • A worn cam lobe on this engine family generally creates a consistent chirp, squeak, squeal or tick at camshaft speed and/or a misfire with a P0300-P0308 DTC.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. A verified noise is not eliminated by canceling fuel injectors and occurs at camshaft speed (half of crankshaft speed).
      2. If applying pressure to the valve side of a rocker changes the noise, a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder is most likely.
      3. Measure cam lobe lift at the push rod side of the rocker arm; it differs from the SI specification but should be similar to the other rockers on the same bank.
      4. A bore scope or pen light helps when inspecting the cam lobes through the lifter bores; a damaged lobe is easy to overlook.
      5. A good indicator of a sticking valve is that misfires continue to count on an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.

      Repair

      • If smoke passes through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid.

      Caution

      • After verifying P0442, do not disturb any fuel system component before testing.
      • Test pressure must not exceed 13 in H2O (0.5 PSI (= 3.45 kPa)); more can make components perform inaccurately and lead to misdiagnosis.

    Remedy
This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.

    1. 1Fault

      Not stated

Read the sentences of the record
    Cause
Certain vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies that contain fuel pump wires and/or connectors that may overheat under certain operating conditions. Fuel pump wires that overheat may become exposed and result in one or more conditions; 1) If the ignition circuit wire is exposed and shorts to ground, the fuel pump fuse will blow, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start condition. 2) If sufficient heat is conducted to the pass-through connector, a hole in the connector may result, which may cause the Service Engine Soon light to be illuminated during the emission system diagnostics routine. Fuel vapour (and in some limited cases liquid fuel) may leak out of the fuel tank through the hole in the connector body. 3) If the ignition circuit or ground wire is exposed and shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, inaccurate fuel level readings may result. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.
