The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Record by record

18 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issues2nd row center seat belt routing (lap belt fit) - recall 05V-1631

  1. Recall2005 GMC YUKON ・ —

2nd Row Center Seat Belt Routing Recall

    1. 1Fault

      • The seat loop at the second row center seating position may make it hard to position the lap portion of the safety belt low around the occupant's hips; in an accident a lap belt that is not low and snug on the hips may not restrain the occupant properly and could raise the risk of abdominal injury.
      • GM states it is not aware of any incident in which this condition has been alleged to have caused or contributed to an occupant injury.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • The 3-point belt for this seating position was designed and validated for the 2003 model year GMT800 utilities and crew cab pick-ups without a loop on the seat around the lap belt webbing.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. Dealers eliminate the seat loop by removing the safety belt from the loop and stitching the loop closed.
      2. Remove the nut retaining the rear center seat's lower seat belt anchor.
      3. Remove the belt from the seat loop on the front of the seat back cushion.
      4. Route the belt outside the seat loop and install it on the lower anchor stud, making sure the belt is not twisted.
      5. Install the retaining nut to the anchor stud and tighten it to 53 N·m (39 lb ft).

      Parts

      • Obtained locally: upholstery thread of a matching color and an upholstery needle (size 16 recommended), 1 each per vehicle.

    • Applies to:The recall covers certain 2003-2005 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado Crew Cab, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon, Yukon XL; and 2004-2005 HUMMER H2 vehicles built within the listed VIN breakpoints.
    • Condition:The seat loop at the second row center seating position may make it hard to position the lap portion of the safety belt low around the occupant's hips; in an accident a lap belt that is not low and snug on the hips may not restrain the occupant properly and could raise the risk of abdominal injury.
    • Cause:The 3-point belt for this seating position was designed and validated for the 2003 model year GMT800 utilities and crew cab pick-ups without a loop on the seat around the lap belt webbing.
    • Condition:GM states it is not aware of any incident in which this condition has been alleged to have caused or contributed to an occupant injury.
    • Repair:Dealers eliminate the seat loop by removing the safety belt from the loop and stitching the loop closed.
    • Parts:Obtained locally: upholstery thread of a matching color and an upholstery needle (size 16 recommended), 1 each per vehicle.
    • Repair:Remove the nut retaining the rear center seat's lower seat belt anchor.
    • Repair:Remove the belt from the seat loop on the front of the seat back cushion.
    • Repair:Route the belt outside the seat loop and install it on the lower anchor stud, making sure the belt is not twisted.
    • Repair:Install the retaining nut to the anchor stud and tighten it to 53 N·m (39 lb ft).
    • Repair:Sew the retaining loop closed in the center with upholstery thread and needle (size 16 recommended), using a minimum of four complete loops of thread.
    • Caution:A later dealer message reports that some technicians complete the repair with a sewing awl instead of a needle.
    Cause
ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
    Remedy
DEALERS WILL CUT OPEN THE GUIDE LOOP, REMOVE A PORTION OF THE LOOP, AND THEN THE REMAINING TWO SIDES SHOULD BE FOLDED OVER AND SECURED WITH A RETAINER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 21, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493.
    Consequence
A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.

    Remedy
All applicable vehicle applications are without Electronic Accessory Control System option. This communication is to return unsold inventory because some product sold in 2016 may not have coil harness wound in a centered condition as an assembly aid. If installer does not center the rotations of the assembly during replacement process in accordance with applicable AllData service and repair procedure, post-install turning of the steering wheel will trigger the air bag warning light of the vehicle.

    Technical Bulletin 05-09-40-002F Notification

    1. 1Fault

      • Overspool lock: if the webbing snaps back to the stowed position rapidly enough, the retractor locks with the belt fully stowed.
      • Vehicle-sensing lock occurs when the vehicle changes speed or direction abruptly: rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration or aggressive cornering.
      • It can also occur with the vehicle static, parked on a large slant, fore-aft or side-to-side.
      • Web-sensing lock: when the webbing reels out at an accelerated rate it goes into lock mode and stays there until tension is released.
      • Pulling the webbing all the way out automatically converts the retractor into a cinch-down mode (ALR), typically used to secure a child seat tightly.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • With the webbing fully loaded on the spool the retractor cannot rewind further to release the locking mechanism, so the occupant cannot extract the belt.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. Pull hard on the locked webbing and then release; the hard pull extracts a small amount of webbing, which permits a small amount of retraction when released.
      2. The ALR mode is cancelled automatically when the belt is unfastened and stowed.

      Caution

      • Do not replace the retractor for this condition before first trying to disengage the locking mechanism as recommended.
      • A belt that the customer says locks intermittently in these conditions is working as designed and functioning properly.

Seat belt buckle operation and warning light issues

    1. 1Fault

      • Seat belt buckles do not operate and/or the seat belt warning light is on; the buckle is hard to latch or unlatch, or the release button sticks.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Sticky beverages spilled onto or into the buckle assembly; debris from food, candy wrappers, paper and coins can also contribute.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • Shine a light on the latch plate insertion area of the buckle and look for debris or foreign objects.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If debris is seen, try to vacuum it out, then latch and unlatch the belt; if it works properly, do not replace the buckle assembly.
      2. If not corrected, inspect the buckle for sticky residue; if found, the buckle assembly must be replaced at the customer's expense.

      Caution

      • Never insert anything but the latch plate into the buckle, do not dig anything out with a tool, and never wash out a buckle to remove a spilled liquid because this may damage it.
      • This is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the new vehicle warranty.

2nd Row Centre Seat Belt Routing Recall

    1. 1Fault

    2. 2Finding the cause

    3. 3Correction

      Not stated

Read the sentences of the record
    Cause
On certain vehicles, the 2nd row centre occupant seat belt routing may make it difficult to position the lap portion of the safety belt low around the hips of occupants. A lap portion of the seat belt routing that is not low and snug on the hips can allow unfavourable occupant kinetics in the event of a crash. Moreover, the higher routing allows the lap belt to ride up on an occupant's abdomen instead of fitting low around their hipbones, and therefore, can expose them to more risk of abdominal and internal organ injury. Correction: Dealers will modify the guide loop.
