Record by record
12 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.
Symptom
Component named as the cause
A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesThrottle body carbon build-up: idle surge, reduced engine power, throttle DTCs (high mileage)1
Manufacturer communication2006 GMC YUKON ・ 2018-01-16
Engine Control System Update - Idle Surge and Power Mode Issues
1Fault
- If enough carbon builds up, an idle surge, deceleration surge, tip-in hesitation, reduced engine power mode, and/or DTCs P0068, P0121, P1516, P2101, P2119 and/or P2176 may be experienced on high mileage vehicles.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- As carbon builds up in the throttle body of a high mileage vehicle, the ECM/PCM learns to compensate by increasing the throttle plate angle.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- If SI diagnosis does not isolate the cause, inspect the throttle body bore and plate for obvious carbon build up.
- Depending on the vehicle, the idle learn reset/reset idle learn is normally found on the Tech 2 ECM menu for Module Set Up or Special Functions/TAC System.
3Correction
Repair
- If carbon is present, follow the Throttle Body Cleaning Procedure in SI to clean the throttle body.
- After ensuring that the throttle body bore and plate are clean, perform an idle learn reset/reset idle learn with the Tech 2/GDS and re-evaluate the concern.
Caution
- If the throttle body is cleaned without performing an idle learn reset/reset idle learn with the Tech 2, the ECM/PCM may continue to compensate for the previous carbon build up, and the concern may return along with DTCs P0121, P0506 and/or P0507.
- If the ECM/PCM of a high mileage vehicle is replaced and/or reprogrammed without performing the Throttle/Idle Learn outlined in SI, it may no longer compensate for existing carbon build up in the throttle body.

Throttle Position Sensor Cover Replacement
1Fault
- Loss of engine power, no acceleration
- Warning light
- Check engine / Service Engine Soon
- Reduced Engine Power
- P2135
- P1516
- P2101
- P2176
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is illuminated with a Reduced Engine Power message displayed.
- A scan tool may show DTC P2135: Throttle Position (TP) Sensor 1-2 Correlation set as Current or in History.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- The condition may be caused by the difference between TP Sensor 1 and TP Sensor 2 exceeding a calibrated value for more than 2 seconds.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- After installing the new cover, if the scan tool TP Sensor 1 and 2 Agree/Disagree parameter displays Disagree, replace the throttle body assembly.
- If DTC P1516, P2101 and/or P2176 are set, replace the throttle body.
3Correction
Repair
- Clean the throttle body bore and throttle plate with a clean shop towel and GM Top Engine Cleaner, P/N 1052626 (in Canada, P/N 993026), or ACDelco Upper Engine and Fuel Injector Cleaner, P/N 88861803, or an equivalent product.
- Remove the old TP sensor cover from the throttle body: grasp the cover, carefully lift it up and separate it from the throttle body.
- Tighten the throttle body fasteners to 89 lb in (= 10.1 N·m) (the text prints the metric value as "10 Y").
- Reprogram the ECM using the Service Programming System (SPS) with the latest calibration available on TIS2WEB.
- Perform the Throttle Learn Reset Procedure.
