Increased accelerator pedal effort / throttle body sticks (clean and adjust, do not replace)

The throttle valve may intermittently stick in the closed position. The extra pedal force applied to open it may open the throttle more than intended and accelerate the engine and vehicle more than the driver expects.

The 59 crashes counted generally occurred during close-quarter maneuvers such as pulling into a parking space or inching forward in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

What to do

  1. The last five digits of the TB part number and the manufacturing date are stamped into the TB mounting flange. The date code has the format 'dddy': day of the year (001 to 365) followed by the last digit of the year (9 = 1999, 0 = 2000).
  2. VRTC compared opening force measured at the accelerator pedal with force measured directly at the throttle cable crank (TB shaft); this confirmed the TB as the source of atypical stiction and eliminated the throttle cable and pedal linkage.
  3. VRTC measured the maximum pedal force needed to open the throttle from closed (typically about 5.0 lbf on a normal vehicle) and the force needed to hold it just off closed (typically about 4.5 lbf). The difference between the two is the throttle stiction force.
  4. A stiction force of about one half (.5) lbf is considered typical; anything greater than .5 lbf is considered atypical.
  5. The correction named in the subject is to clean the throttle body and adjust the blade.
  6. Clean the throttle body, adjust the blade and insert plugs.
