Mid-frame cross member tear could puncture fuel tank in angled frontal impact - recall 03V-019

Certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles; the NHTSA record lists GMC Yukon XL 2003. Model years come from the NHTSA record's product list held in the database, not from the recall text.

In a sufficiently severe 30-degree left angle frontal impact, a tear could develop in the mid-frame cross member where it attaches to the left frame rail.

What to do

  1. Dealers install a fuel tank shield.

If left

  • If the mid-frame cross member tears during frontal impact and produces a sharp edge, contact of the sharp edge with the fuel tank could result in a puncture of the fuel tank and possible fuel leakage.→ fuel tank puncture and fuel leakage
  • Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.→ fire

In the records

  • Fuel Tank Shield: replaced 2
