Shift lever position indicator in the instrument cluster may not illuminate (FMVSS 102) - recall 05V-055

Certain sport utility vehicles with an automatic transmission; the NHTSA record lists GMC Yukon and Yukon XL 2005. Model years come from the NHTSA record's product list held in the database, not from the recall text.

Under certain starting conditions the shift lever position indicator in the instrument panel cluster may not illuminate; on later start-ups the condition may or may not recur.

Under certain starting conditions the shift lever position indicator in the instrument panel cluster may not illuminate.

The PRNDL indicator behavior is induced only by a very specific battery voltage waveform and depends on vehicle level characteristics, while the vehicle otherwise operates normally.

What to do

  1. Dealers reprogram the instrument panel cluster.
  2. Prepare the vehicle for instrument panel cluster (IPC) reprogramming, then program the IPC using TIS data version 2.25.

If left

  • If the indicator does not illuminate, the driver may not know which gear the vehicle is in.→ driver not knowing the selected gear
  • The vehicle may move in an unintended direction, possibly injuring others outside the vehicle.→ vehicle moving in an unintended direction

  • Why it happensThe PRNDL indicator behavior is induced only by a very specific battery voltage waveform and depends on vehicle level characteristics, while the vehicle otherwise operates normally.

Investigation identified that the PRNDL indicator behavior is only induced with a very specific battery voltage waveform and is dependent on vehicle level characteristics, although the vehicle is operating normally.— [2]
