Record by record
274 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

Work done
How it is said to have ended
- says it was fixed2
- says it held for a while5
- says it came back5
- says it did not fix it14
- result not stated24
A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Positive battery cable contact with steering shaft universal joint (Denali) - Transport Canada 2001092Repair
- Dealers inspect the cable routing and reroute if necessary.
- The cable is also inspected for wear and replaced if necessary.
Read the sentences of the record
- Cause
- On certain Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali vehicles, the positive battery cable assembly that could come in contact with the steering shaft universal joint. This could eventually cause a wear through of the cable assembly convoluted conduit and cable insulation and result in intermittent electrical shorting. This could result in overheating and igniting of the cable insulation and conduit and a possible underhood fire. Correction: Dealers will inspect the positive battery cable for proper routing and reroute if necessary. Cable will also be inspected for wear of the conduit and cable insulation, and replaced if necessary.

- Remedy
- Vehicle Wide Programming (VWP) is a new process to update software on GM Vehicles. It provides the ability via a single selection within Techline Connect to first identify which modules need updating and then proceed to updating affected modules (with some exceptions). The updating of modules is completed in parallel instead of the technician needing to update one module at a time. This allows a more streamlined approach for dealers and customers.

- SES, MIL or CEL light on with numerous communication DTCs such as U0100, U0101, U186B and U1862.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- Monitoring devices and other electronic accessories such as aftermarket cruise control or police speed checking devices (RADAR or LIDAR) may cause one or more of the listed concerns.
- Many of the problems could come from an open connection on the HSCAN bus; a device that connects to only one CAN + causes bus errors and erratic ECU behavior.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- If normal SI diagnostics find no other root cause, check for a device plugged into the ALDL or Data Link Connector (DLC) for tracking and/or maintenance interval scheduling.
3Correction
Repair
- If SI diagnostics do not find the source and the device is available, try to duplicate the condition, then remove the device to see whether the condition is eliminated.
- If removing the DLC interface device resolves the concern, tell the customer the result and that they should work with the device's supplier for further resolution.
Caution
- The device and the rest of its harness can be hidden out of sight, and the technician may not notice that the diagnostic connector is not in the factory location.

EVAP System Leak Diagnosis for MIL with DTCs P0442/P0455
1Fault
- The MIL is illuminated and DTC P0442 (EVAP small leak detected) and/or P0455 (EVAP large leak detected) is set in the Engine Control Module (ECM).
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- DTC P0455 sets for a large leak or a purge blockage; a large leak can come from an unseated tube connection, a damaged tube, a stuck open canister vent valve or a stuck closed purge valve.
- DTC P0442 sets for a small leak, which can come from a stuck open purge valve or a stuck open canister vent valve.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- Inspect all purge connections for proper installation and look for damage or wear along the lines; if damage is seen, confirm with the smoke test.
- Some leaks show only under pressure and some only under vacuum, so check both ways.
- Cycling the purge and vent solenoids with GDS2 while inspecting may indicate a sticking valve.
- Critical connections on the engine side: purge tube to purge valve at the intake manifold, purge tube to chassis EVAP line at the rear of the engine near the transmission, and chassis EVAP line to canister.
- Critical connections on the tank side: fuel tank load line to canister, vent valve line to vent valve, fuel tank load line jumper connection near the fuel tank, and the fuel tank cap being closed properly.

Fuel Module Reservoir Assembly Overheating Recall
1Fault
2Finding the cause
3Correction
Not stated
Read the sentences of the record
- Cause
- Certain vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies that contain fuel pump wires and/or connectors that may overheat under certain operating conditions. Fuel pump wires that overheat may become exposed and result in one or more conditions; 1) If the ignition circuit wire is exposed and shorts to ground, the fuel pump fuse will blow, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start condition. 2) If sufficient heat is conducted to the pass-through connector, a hole in the connector may result, which may cause the Service Engine Soon light to be illuminated during the emission system diagnostics routine. Fuel vapour (and in some limited cases liquid fuel) may leak out of the fuel tank through the hole in the connector body. 3) If the ignition circuit or ground wire is exposed and shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, inaccurate fuel level readings may result. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.
